These Shrimp Deviled Eggs Are the Perfect Party Snack!

September 20, 2022

Deviled eggs are a go-to dish for any occasion. Whether at an upscale dinner party or tailgating with friends, this dish is an excellent mix of being easy to make and delicious to taste.

The dish itself has a fascinating history. While it could be assumed that the dish originated in the United States due to its popularity as an appetizer, the origin of deviled eggs traces back to ancient Rome. Boiled eggs seasoned with spicy sauces were a common dish served at the beginning of meals. It was so common that the Romans had a saying for it – “ab ova usque ad mala” – or “from eggs to apples”, meaning from the beginning of a meal to the end.

So, why are they called “deviled” eggs? The culinary term “devil” can find its first usage in Great Britain in 1786, where its first printed mention was referencing meals that featured hot ingredients or were highly seasoned and broiled. By 1800, deviling was being applied to making any food spicier. The rest is history!

While the filling for deviled eggs is most frequently held together by mayonnaise, the condiment was not commonly used in American deviled egg recipes until the 1940s (even though mayonnaise began being distributed commercially in the U.S. in 1907). Of course, these days, deviled eggs regularly consist of the same basic ingredients: boiled eggs cut in half with the yolks removed and mixed with mayonnaise, mustard, relish and paprika before being refilled back into the halved eggs.  But what if we took deviled eggs to a new level and added… wild-caught American shrimp?

Chefs around the world continue to incorporate their own special twists to the recipe, but to us, none of them can beat the scrumptious taste of shrimp deviled eggs. Adding shrimp will bring this average finger food to a fancy addition to menus.
