Vitamins are organic compounds found in a variety of foods. They may be small, but they play a huge role in keeping your body healthy. A balanced diet is one that includes a multitude of food groups and, thus, a multitude of vitamins (alongside the various other health-promoting elements in shrimp such as selenium).

Luckily for all of the shrimp lovers out there, shrimp contain several vitamins that improve your health! We’ve discussed in the past how wild-caught, American shrimp are made up almost entirely of protein, and that same protein is chockful of many different vitamins that help keep your body in tip-top shape!

Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium, one of the main building blocks for strong bones and, combined with calcium, helps prevent the development of osteoporosis, a disease that thins and weakens bones. Muscles also need vitamin D to move, and nerves need it to carry messages between your brain and body. Your immune system even uses it to fight off invading bacteria and viruses!

Vitamin B6 is a vitamin that is needed for over 100 enzyme reactions involved in metabolism, the process by which the body turns food into energy for various bodily processes. Vitamin B6 is also involved in brain development and immune function during pregnancy and infancy!

Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy. B12 also helps make DNA and prevents megaloblastic anemia, a type of anemia that makes people feel weak and fatigued.

Any time you enjoy the delicious taste of wild-caught, American shrimp, you’re reaping the benefits of these (and many more) super healthy vitamins! Who says staying healthy has to be hard?
