USDA Plans to Purchase Wild-Caught American Shrimp

August 24, 2026

The American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA) applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s announcement that it plans to purchase wild-caught shrimp for distribution through federal food nutrition assistance programs.

This purchase represents important support for America’s domestic shrimp industry and the hardworking fishermen, processors, employees, families and coastal communities that depend on it.

Under the USDA announcement, shrimp purchased through the program must be a product of the United States, grown, processed and otherwise prepared for sale or distribution exclusively in the United States.

At a time when America’s shrimp industry continues to face significant challenges from imported shrimp, USDA’s commitment to purchasing American wild-caught shrimp is especially meaningful. These purchases help create demand for a wholesome, high-quality domestic product while supporting American businesses and American jobs throughout the Gulf Coast and beyond.

ASPA appreciates USDA recognizing the importance of America’s wild-caught shrimp industry and providing an opportunity for nutritious American seafood to reach families through food and nutrition assistance programs.

When USDA buys American shrimp, it supports much more than a product — it supports American fishermen, American processors, American workers and the coastal communities they call home.

ASPA thanks the USDA for its continued support of America’s domestic shrimp industry.
