ASPA Thanks Senator Cassidy for Request to Maintain Duties on Shrimp from Ecuador
On June 12, 2025, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce urging the agency to maintain anti-subsidy duties on shrimp from Ecuador. The letter asks the agency to terminate a review that was requested by Ecuadorian companies in an attempt to get the agency to revoke anti-subsidy duties imposed on their exports in December of 2024. The duties were imposed as the result of trade petitions filed by the American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA).
“We are deeply grateful to Senator Cassidy for his strong support on this vital issue,” said Trey Pearson, the President of ASPA. “Senator Cassidy understands that our domestic shrimp industry has been hammered by unfair imports from Ecuador, and we applaud the Senator for asking Commerce to maintain the duties on subsidized imports from Ecuador that ASPA obtained at the end of last year.”
Senator Cassidy’s request supports a similar letter filed by ASPA on June 2, 2025, arguing that the review requested by the Ecuadorian companies exceeded Commerce’s legal authority. The Senator’s letter notes that the agency itself suggested that the review process was not legally required in a request for comments published on June 4, 2025. ASPA will continue to work with its allies in Congress and the Administration to ensure that the trade relief resulting from its petitions is fully enforced and that importers pay all antidumping and subsidy duties required by law.
